Trinidad is nice …. Tobago too !!

If you ever wondered where the phrase came from, its from the immortal ballad by Valentino  “ This Place Nice” better known as ‘ Trinidad is nice - Trinidad is a paradise ’ a song which offers sharp contrast to Len Wards “ Portrait of Trinidad ” another immortal as sung by the Mighty Sniper. 

 But that was back then and at a time when you said Trinidad, you meant Trinidad and Tobago. 

Today however, we talk about Tobago. Beautiful tranquil and … changing fast. 

Having spent a formidable part of my youth there and walked the streets of Scarborough to the beaches at Speyside and Charlottevile, my memories are somewhat nostalgic. 

I keep returning four to six times a year and Tobago always refreshes me. 

Scarborough is now a bustling mini metropolis [by Caribbean standards of course] and there you’ll still find incredibly centred, fiercely independent and articulate people, most of whom will take the time to talk with you.  

Religion still plays an important part in the lives of Tobagonians as I discovered while still a young boy growing up there in the heady days of early independence and nation building.  

Scenic and green  for the most part, today you are more likely to have a large billboard, advertising some consumer nonsense product [ that Tobagonians suddenly cant live without ], block an incredible view of the coastline.  

Consumerism is quickly replacing hard core values, community spirit, neighbourliness and pride in country.

Tobagonians would be well advised to hold on to those values that make us as a people .... unique and distinctive in the world . 

Just take a look at the video attached and the impact  we can, and  still do, make on those that come to our islands' shores.
